Summary:
Art and Drama Therapies are modalities utilized in the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit to create safe and often playful environments for patients to explore and express themselves. Mediums of coloring, scribbling, painting, building, portraying thoughts and ideas as actions, and taking on roles allows the therapist to connect to the patient in a manner that is less stressful than traditional talk therapy. Both professions are an adjunct to talk therapy. The Art/Drama Therapist engages with individuals or a group providing prompts such as an open-ended statement, writing a play, putting together a collage of pictures that are important. Both the Art and Drama Therapist build therapeutic rapport and provide a safe, non-judgmental, inclusive environment for the individual or group to freely explore and own thoughts and emotions. The work is the ownership of the individual or group and honored as such. This genuine acknowledgement of thoughts and emotions supports the overall treatment plan of the individual and group members.
Responsibilities:
1.Plan, develops, and implements therapeutic group sessions for children and adolescents
2.Conducts group sessions for individual patients or a group of patients
3.Membership in the multi-disciplinary TEAM providing insight into patient treatment plans
4.Other duties as required.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1.Experience in working with children and adolescents is required.
2.Experience working with children and adolescents experiencing behavioral health concerns is preferred.
3.Experience in a pediatric healthcare setting is preferred.
4.The ability to communicate among and between various disciplines to assist in individualized patient care is required.
Education and Experience
1.Education: Master of Arts in Art Therapy or Drama Therapy
2.Certification: ATR (Art Therapist Registered) by the Art Therapy Credentials Board or RDT (Registered Drama Therapist) by the North American Drama Therapy Association
3.Healthcare Provider BLS through the American Heart Association
4.Years of experience: minimum of 1-3 years' experience
5.Years of experience supervising: none
