This position is located at the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System in Topeka, KS. The Health Technician performs routine phlebotomy, electrocardiograms, aerosol respiratory therapy, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chart documentation duties, direct patient care duties, patient and family teaching duties, and patient safety duties. IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-6 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Health Technician position to be filled. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes performing routine phlebotomy, specimen collections, labeling and handling/delivery of blood specimens; performs respiratory therapy procedures and electrocardiograms (EKGs); recording treatments, findings, and progress in patient record; performs patient and family teaching that includes instruction for home care concerning breathing exercises, treatments and rehabilitation. Instructing patients to perform incentive spirometry and follows up with patient to ensure proper usage. Recording treatments, findings, and progress in the patient record. Performing standard 12-lead EKGs and performing necessary maintenance, storage, and cleaning of EKG equipment. Collecting specimens for blood glucose analysis using the blood glucose monitoring instrument; entering and verifying completed test results, and reporting results to appropriate individuals; calibrating, cleaning, and maintaining the instrument. Preparing and assisting with examinations, diagnostic, and therapeutic tests according to written procedures and policies. Performing and recording a variety of advanced specialized treatments that include nasal, nasopharyngeal and/or tracheotomy suctioning, inserting urethral and suprapubic catheters, institutes and maintains bladder irrigations with three-way urethral catheters. Providing care for patients requiring artificial ventilatory assistance. Performing other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Shifts vary and will include holidays.
