This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Psychiatry with a preference for subspecialty certification in Geriatric Psychiatry. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. The programs include inpatient venues of the Community Living Centers (CLC's) and the Home- Based Primary Care Programs (HBPC). Responsibilities include providing assessment and recommendations to the primary providers and interdisciplinary teams on geropsychiatric issues of Veteran patients either in person or via electronic consultation. Clinical: The EC&PMS Staff Psychiatrist is primarily assigned inpatient consultation responsibilities in the CLC. The Staff Psychiatrist is responsible for providing assessment, diagnosis & recommendations on psychiatric issues, participating with admitting decisions, participating in family conferences, and being an active member of the interdisciplinary team. The incumbent is an integral part of the CLC interdisciplinary treatment team and participates in all activities pertinent to the inpatient unit. The incumbent will also support the psychiatric management of patients in the HBPC program via either telephonic or electronic consultation. The incumbent also participates in and directs activities pertaining to quality improvement and strategic planning for the service, institution, and the organization. The incumbent also supports preparatory activities related to oversight organizations such as the Long Term Care Institute (LTCI) and The Joint Commission (TJC) as appropriate. The VAPAHCS includes CLCs in three locations, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore as well as three HBPC programs in Palo Alto, San Jose, and Modesto. The incumbent will primarily be stationed at the CLC located in Menlo Park. The incumbent will provide psychiatric support and consultation support to other campuses via electronic means. Administrative: The EC&PMS Staff Psychiatrist participates in: EC&PMS, ECS and Hospital Committees EC&PM Service Meetings Faculty Meetings as appropriate if an academic affiliate faculty member Education: The EC&PMS Staff Psychiatrist may hold a faculty appointment at Stanford University in the division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
